ready to work

Although work attire is simple and relaxed here in the Middle East, I remember back in my NYC days, it was an entirely different story. I at first ran around to job interviews wearing my sister’s black, Jcrew, pant suit. Then later after scoring a job, I had to keep up with my stylish workmates who shopped waaaay more than I did. Of course, work dress code depends a lot on which field you work in and what position you might hold, but overall, New Yorkers are known (amongst a billion other things) for their fabulous work getups.

These days, I not only work in the high tech industry, which is notorious for it’s relaxed work attire, but I work in a country that doesn’t enforce any kind of work dress code. (or any kind of code code period.) It’s such a breeze! You wake up, shower or not shower and throw on a pair of dog haired jeans and a crumpled up top you grabbed from the dirty laundry. Who cares?

Well, sometimes I do. I can miss those L train fashion packed commutes, rallying uptown in the morning then back out to Billyburg in the evening, peering over at a girl’s skirt impatiently swishing around while waiting on the platform, or a boy’s sneakers planted directly below my subway seat gaze. Each day was truly a full day of fashion inspiration.

In my work wear daydream today, I picked out some work pieces that I could wear just about anywhere. Shopping on: opening ceremony, urban, anthropologie and shopbird.

bird takes flight

I’m really loving the new bunch that was brought in over at bird! I mean, just when you thought 3.1 Phillip Lim couldn’t get any better, he goes and bangs out another round of hits, filled with lemons, stars, ruffles and pleats. How can you go wrong with a set like that? And Mina Perhonen, who also likes stars, oh what sweet, sweet pieces of fun! Props to Katy Rodriguez… you really know how to do a batwing! And I can’t leave out Generra, who was once the 80’s brainchild behind Technicolor tees! Thank you for the summer tanks! Phew, I’m exhausted. Just take a look.

tote tootin’ time

Tote bag season is just around the corner. The canvas tote is the cheap and somewhat disposable carry-all answer for that heavy heat, and whether you’re city bound or riding around in an airconditionless crapper in the country suburbs, this washable friend will be your best summer pal.  It will be true to the bulk of your sunhats, the grease of your sunblock, the fragility of your sunglasses and anything else with the word sun in it. I’ve already purchased my tote bag for the season but I thought it timely to toot the tote and rally up a totable team. (heh…) And if you’re not already a tote lover, maybe these will change your mind.

short series

I don’t know about you, but sometimes I find it hard to not look like a stereotypical American tourist when wearing shorts in the summer. There are, of course, ways of getting around that “American” (not that there’s anything wrong with that) look, by maybe wearing a pair of unbelievably hip sandals or dangerously short 80’s shorts, or by sticking with this year’s obvious solution, the “romper.” But let’s face it, we can’t wear a romper every day. This summer, I want to make shorts cool again! Like really cool. How will I do that you ask? Well, I’m still working on it…  but we can at least start with some shorts that won’t make you feel too much like a Griswald.

Shop these looks at shopbird, urban outfitters, letrainbleu, and topshop.

oxford street style

I once knew a girl in ’97 who always wore jazz shoes. We called her “Jazz Shoe Girl” (very original). Although I sort of snickered behind her back with my friends, I secretly envied her for her courage to wear dance shoes out on the street. Maybe the others did also. Flash forward to 2005 and I’m sitting at a Middle Eastern bar with my BF, and his friend’s wife is wearing a pair of black men’s oxfords. She was ahead of the game and I wasn’t ready for them. Here they are now, all over the place, and I’m just now beginning to accept them… especially those solo patent Mauds. (That’s right S!)

top of the tops

I was fishing around for simple summer tops that are easy to throw on with whatever, because I’m lazy like that, and found 9 nifty nuggets of affordables. I shopped around the obvious, cheaper, but cooly sites. These are my faves: 80spurple, Modcloth, Urban Outfitters, Pixiemarket, ASOS and Topshop. I also scanned just a couple of the more expensive (top notch) shops because it sort of felt necessary: Frances May, Farfetch and Bird. I tried to keep them under $50 but couple of them went over. Sorry. Here are my picks:

Waistcoat tee (Ben Sherman) ASOS ~ Pup tee (Fox in Mociun) Francis May ~ S & N (silence and noise) ruffle Urban Outfitters ~ Check top FCUK ~ Gymnast tee Farfetch ~ Daisy chain tee 80spurple ~ Giraffe tee Bird ~ Zip tunic Topshop ~ Zip vest Topshop.
